If you’ve ever looked at server racks, switches or patch panels, you’ve probably seen measurements such as 1U, 2U or 4U.
The “U” stands for rack unit and describes the vertical space a piece of equipment occupies inside a rack. One rack unit is 1.75 inches (44.45 mm) high. A 1U switch therefore takes up one unit of space, while a 4U device takes up four.
It sounds simple, but knowing your U’s is essential when planning a rack. Every switch, patch panel, server and accessory takes up valuable space. Plan it properly, and your rack remains organised and expandable. Ignore it, and suddenly that “almost empty” rack has nowhere left for your new switch.
